Dance with Me!
There is a lot more to my life than this awful beast called cancer. I have one incredibly amazing son who is in his freshman year of college. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats. Mungo is a short-haired Border Collie who will be 6 in May. Millie is a Golden Retriever who will be 2 in a few days. All my cats have superhero names: Storm, Rocket, and Groot. I work in special education and have been in education for 21 years. I have always enjoyed writing and reading. In the last few years, I have found that I enjoy crafting as well. I am currently working on typing up a book I wrote when my son was young, and though I am mostly finished with the book, I still have to add the ending. In addition, I have started writing a second, and I hope to self-publish both books someday. I enjoy more simple things in life these days as well...the sun shining on my face, the feel of the grass on my feet, the sighs that come from my dogs, and the laughter that comes from great memories made.
My Story
I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in July 2024. My mutation is TP53. I was told this is a poor prognosis and a transplant is my best option for long-term survival. My treatments are still on-going, and while I achieved remission, it was short-lived. I have had 8 bone marrow biopsies to date, gone through 6 rounds of chemotherapy, and am about to participate in a clinical trial that includes a stem cell transplant.
I hope to tell a story of courage, bravery, perseverance, and determination. I won't pretend to have all the answers or understand what this all means. However, I feel compelled to share my experiences. I hope that, in sharing my story, I can help others. This may come as developing a better understanding of my perspective, as helping someone have the courage to tell their own story, or as giving someone the words they need to explain their experiences to their loved ones.
